Accounting for resource accumulation in Japanese prefectures: an environmental efficiency analysis
نویسنده
چکیده
1 Background In 2013, the Japanese Ministry of the Environment issued the “Third Fundamental Plan for Establishing a Sound Material-Cycle Society” (Ministry of the Environment 2013). The plan explains that, in order to create a sound material-cycle society, it will be necessary not only to focus on societal material flow and improve resource productivity, but also to focus on societal material stock, to utilize stock more efficiently, and to accumulate stock that will increase social welfare (Ministry of the Environment 2013). A seminal study focusing on material flow is by Wolman (1965). Walman’s study described cities as organisms that have a metabolism: Materials and energy are fed into cities, while waste matter is discharged. By examining the process of inputs and outputs in a socioeconomic system, Wolman (1965) showed the importance of quantifying the amount of resources (e.g., food, fuel, and electricity) needed to sustain lives or production activities, and of analyzing the interactions between material and energy flows and their associated environmental problems. Fischer-Kowalski (1998) conducted a seminal study that considered the metabolism of cities from many different perspectives, such as biology, ecology, social theory, cultural anthropology, and social geography, and pointed out the importance of analyzing Abstract

Eco-intensity Analysis as Sustainability Indicators related to Energy and Material Flow
This paper presents the results of an analysis on energy and material flow in different regions and industrial sectors of Japan to evaluate regional and industrial sustainability. Several life cycle approaches used to quantify environmental efficiency related to energy and material flows were investigated as applications of life cycle tools in emerging markets, including the service industry an...
متن کاملThe use of link provider data to improve national genetic evaluation across weakly connected subpopulations.
Data from 3 prefectures and a nationwide farming corporation were used to assess the usefulness of the "link provider data" in providing indirect genetic links for the national genetic evaluation for carcass weight across weakly connected subpopulations of the Japanese Black cattle. The data from the farming corporation provided genetic links to those of all prefectures and was therefore used a...
متن کاملBioaccumulation of Lead in the Tissues of Japanese Quails and Its Effects on Blood Biochemical Factors
Background: Lead is the oldest known toxic metal, physiologically and biologically harmful to living creatures. This study aimed to evaluate the lead accumulation in the liver and breast muscles of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) and to compare concentrations in both sexes and its effect on blood biochemical factors. Methods: Twenty-four young farm Japanese quails (25 day old) prepared fr...
متن کاملLinkage analysis of microsatellite markers on chromosome 5 in an F2 population of Japanese quail to identify quantitative trait loci affecting carcass traits
An F2 Japanese quail population was developed by crossing two strains (wild and white) to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for performance and carcass traits. A total of 472 F2 birds were reared and slaughtered at 42 days of age. Performance and carcass traits were measured on all of the F2 individuals. Parental (P0), F1 and F2 individuals were genotyped with 3 microsatellites from quail chrom...
متن کاملSustainability of environmental management in Iran: An ecological footprint analysis
ABSTRACT- Sustainability and environmental management are the most cited ideas linking the environment and development. The sustainability of natural resources depends upon our paradigm and related approaches to the relationship between society and the environment. Efficient management is a primary task due to the pressure on nature. Ecological footprint analysis has been intro...
